Self-pity is a typical feeling that can quickly turn into a conditioned reaction to life’s challenges. A pervasive sense of one’s own misfortune or abuse is one of its defining characteristics, along with a weakened sense of personal action or the capacity to alter one’s circumstances. Although self-pity is a normal emotional state that is part of the human experience, it may be harmful when it persists over time and creates a vicious cycle of pessimism and inaction that impedes enjoyment and personal development.
